Retablos, also known as ex-voto paintings, depict miracles or blessings and are offered to the Heavenly intercessor who helped make it happen. They are very popular in Mexico where you can often see entire walls in churches lined with them. Retablos are most often painted on sheets of tin and include an artistic scenes as well as text describing the event in the picture.
Translation of text: I give infinite thanks to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Holiest Virgin of San Juan de la Varranquita [sic] for having granted health to the children who were suffering. The first, Alfredo Ramirez, from breonchitis, the second, Javier Estudiante [student?], suffering from bronchitis. The third, Luis Felipe Cruz, suffering from bronchitis, and 1 Guadalupe Rojo de Cruz, suffering from a stomach ache.
