Retablos, also known as ex-voto paintings, depict miracles or blessings and are offered to the Heavenly intercessor who helped make it happen. They are very popular in Mexico where you can often see entire walls in churches lined with them. Retablos are most often painted on sheets of tin and include an artistic scenes as well as text describing the event in the picture.
Translation of text: On March 18, 1923, Mrs. Angela Almansa was deathly ill, almost given for dead due to a severe illness that she contracted, which had her agonizing, and her husband, Rafall [Rafael?] Montezuma, invoked the Miraculous Image of the Holiest Virgin of San Juan to bring her relief, and in gratitude for the marvelous miracle that She performed for them, they dedicate the present retablo.
