Retablos, also known as ex-voto paintings, depict miracles or blessings and are offered to the Heavenly intercessor who helped make it happen. They are very popular in Mexico where you can often see entire walls in churches lined with them. Retablos are most often painted on sheets of tin and include an artistic scenes as well as text describing the event in the picture.
Translation of text: On January 28, 1958, Mr. Refugio Castaņon promised the Holiest Virgin of San Juan de Barranquita a retablo with his entire family, giving thanks for relieving his wife of the illness that she had, and She [also] freed me from the hands of some bad friends, in Tamazopo. – January 25, 1959.
