Retablos, also known as ex-voto paintings, depict miracles or blessings and are offered to the Heavenly intercessor who helped make it happen. They are very popular in Mexico where you can often see entire walls in churches lined with them. Retablos are most often painted on sheets of tin and include an artistic scenes as well as text describing the event in the picture.

Translation of text: I give a statement of thanks to the Holiest Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos for a great miracle performed on the person of my father, Mr. Jesus Villafranco, saving him from a severe accident, which happened on January 19, 1935.
